Tempesta

Giorgione’s La Tempesta (c. 1508) places a soldier, a nursing woman and a town beneath an approaching storm. No reading has settled what the scene means. It is often cited among the first paintings in which landscape ceases to be a backdrop and becomes the subject.

In Tempesta, every human figure and every trace of human construction is removed from the image, and the gaps are filled by AI. What remains is a landscape with a single event: lightning on the horizon.

The emptiness is not empty. The model that completes the image knows only what it has been shown: centuries of painted trees, skies and rivers, reduced to probability. The non-human is a statistical human. A landscape devoid of people, made entirely of them.
